This 2-day course will give you a firm understanding of how effective managers and leaders work within the NHS. Designed with the NHS healthcare leadership model in mind, the course focuses on 4 key areas of leadership and management that are critical for leaders and managers in all walks of the NHS.

Over the 2 days participants will be introduced to key concepts of leadership and management practice and apply these to their own practice. Participants will learn about the following:
- How the NHS is structured and how patients and money move around the NHS. What are the implications of this for leaders and managers?
- The similarities and differences between leadership and management
- Leadership styles. What is the preferred leadership style of the NHS? What is the preferred leadership style of the participants?
- How to lead and manage yourself more effectively. Emotional intelligence and the emotionally intelligent leader.
- How to lead and manage teams by creating an inspirational vision and leading by example.
- Understanding team roles, maximising strengths and minimising weaknesses.
- Understanding individuals and how to flex your leadership style from individual to individual.
- Understanding the business of the NHS and how to create robust business proposals.

Participants will also consider the impact of this on leaders and managers within the NHS. |

11.30 | Leadership and management styles | Participants will complete a self-assessment questionnaire to identify their preferred leadership style and how this relates to the preferred leadership style of the NHS. |
12.00 | Self-leadership - the emotionally intelligent leader | Participants will consider the concept of emotional intelligence and how this can help leaders and managers to improve their effectiveness by understanding their emotions and emotional triggers, as well as considering the impact that they, as leaders and managers , will have on the emotions of others. |

11.15 | The leader as coach and mentor | Participants will be introduced to concept of coaching and mentoring and how this fits within the NHS culture of leadership and management. Participants will be introduced to and practice active coaching and mentoring using the GROW model. |

14.00 | Managing the business of the NHS. | Participants will consider how to create a robust business plan, working through a series of exercises to demonstrate the concepts and bring them to life. Participants will also learn how to negotiate with other stakeholders to ensure that their plans and proposals are as successful as possible. |
